online mixed media workshop

I’m happy to announce that I will be one of nine mixed-media instructors for a nine-week online workshop hosted by Big Picture Class!  It’s something that’s been in the works for a while and it’s rolling out starting today.  Here’s a peek at the project I will be teaching…lots of fun little techniques and a work of art for your home.

I would love to have you join me by clicking this link and signing up for the workshop (well, really it’s nine workshops in one!).  If you’ve taken a Big Picture Class before, you know you’re in for a mixed-media treat.

Hope today is beautiful for you and yours…

{ a quilt to be }

“After all, a woman didn’t leave much behind in the world to show she’d been there.

Even the children she bore and raised got their father’s name.

But her quilts, now that was something she could pass on.”

{ author Sandra Dallas }

If you know anything about me, you know I love to sew.  I love to sew.  I’ve been sewing every Monday with the ladies at church, making little quilts for Haiti.  But for the longest time I’ve wanted to make a quilt for my own home.  And after seeing Pam’s post on her quilt here, I got inspired enough to cut the first little scraps and begin.

quilt-aug-2014-2And I suppose I have to say that the best way to quilt for me is to not have a plan.  To pick up pieces and fragments of fabric that’ve collected over the years and work it in.  Makes me feel better about saving even the tiniest of scraps.

quilt-aug-2014-4I come from a long line of quilters.  And when my college daughter came home this summer and began her own quilt project…well, I felt my sweet granny smiling down from above.

quilt-aug-2014-6The finished quilt top is as far as I’ve come though.  And now it has to be folded and tucked away until winter.  What with my too-busy late summer and autumn (teaching, shows, Haiti trip, etc.).

quilt-aug-2014-5But what a thing to look forward to when the cold winds begin to blow.  Maybe when I pull it back out, some of summer’s warmth will still be tucked in its folds.  I’d like to think so.

Do you quilt?

August 12, 2014 - 3:04 am

Debbie - Oh yes…I love the lovely colors of your quilt. I’m currently hand piecing a Grandmother’s Flower Garden inspired by one my Mom & Grandma made years ago…and which is my favorite quilt. I somehow feel a connection to them as I piece my version of the same quilt. I also hope to be quilting it this winter…also all by hand.
Thanks for sharing your quilt.

August 12, 2014 - 3:15 am

Dawn - Such pretty colors, Rebecca!
I have made several quilts over the years.
I do not consider myself a true quilter.
Just a dabber.
I admire those who are good at it.
Happy August days to you.
Dawn xo

August 12, 2014 - 3:59 am

Carolyn Peeler - This is beautiful Rebecca. Can’t wait to see what it looks like when you’re done!

August 12, 2014 - 1:26 pm

rebecca_sower@bellsouth.net - Thank you Dawn!
I would like to think us dabblers are true quilters too 🙂
Much love to you and yours…R.

August 12, 2014 - 3:07 pm

Julie - Beautiful quilt! Love the colors and relaxed look of it. Also, really love the quote that I have to save. My mom’s quilts are treasured even more deeply since she graduated to live with Jesus last year. Wonderful thing to leave your loved ones!

August 12, 2014 - 5:23 pm

Sheila Rumney - I love all the colors in your quilt and how brave you are to not follow a pattern! I made quilts before our kiddos came, but now I enjoy making art that isn’t so time consuming. Maybe one day, I will return back to quilting. Thanks for sharing your beautiful quilt!

August 12, 2014 - 7:04 pm

Lynne - What a lovely thought, to capture some of that summer sunshine in your quilt, and release it in the darker months. It’s so lovely to see a personal, ‘one off’ quilt.
I’ve made a few quilts, and even more are waiting to be quilted. Of late, I’ve been making patchwork cushion covers. It allows me to complete something. Hopefully!
I’ve just read your ‘Seeing time’ post. I think I will take up your challenge. I will let you know when I do.

August 12, 2014 - 7:36 pm

Beth F. - My dear sweet grandmother taught me to quilt years ago, even taught me how to make a pattern using the newspaper. Now, those were the days! I haven’t quilted in some time but I think I need to go through the fabric stash and see what inspires me.

August 13, 2014 - 12:49 am

Kelly - Lovely quilt, Rebecca! I long to quilt and sew but I simply do not have the intangibles required to quilt. Nothing I do turns out very well and that makes me frustrated. Perhaps when my kids are older I will learn!

I’m not sure when you are going, but please send my love to the Haitian people. I so enjoy the metal work I bought from you a while back that was handcrafted in Haiti.

God bless you!

August 13, 2014 - 4:39 pm

Lorrie - A beautiful quilt top, Rebecca. I have quilted. I hope to quilt more. My mother makes beautiful quilts that are auctioned off at the annual Mennonite Central Committee sale to benefit aid work.

August 15, 2014 - 7:36 am

pam - LOVE IT!!!!!!! so so much…xoxo

August 15, 2014 - 5:38 pm

Julie - I just had the wierdest thing happen…..The quote at the top of your post prompted me to look up books by Sandra Dallas and I ordered “Prayers for Sale” based on the reviews, people saying it was a comforting read which is perfect bedtime reading.

No kidding….The book arrived yesterday and this morning I opened it in the middle to read a random page to get a feel for the author’s style, and my eyes landed right on your exact quote!!

What were the odds?!

August 17, 2014 - 2:59 am

Linda Jo - Beautiful piece!!!! Yes, I’ve made quite a few quilts. I used to piece and hand quilt. Now I pay someone to machine quilt them for me!!! But I don’t make many now.

August 20, 2014 - 8:30 am

rebecca_sower@bellsouth.net - Oh my goodness…that is crazy!!
So glad you shared this with me, and would love to hear how you like the book. I haven’t read it.
Hope today’s good for you.

August 20, 2014 - 3:49 pm

Anne-Liesse - Oh, my goodness. What a lovely quilt and what a lovely idea to think about. I am a scrapbooker and paper crafter, and I am comforted by the fact that I will be leaving my stories behind for others. This quilt will do just the same thing without all of the sharp corners and bent edges. I think of all of the comfort it will bring and the stories that will be told around it. Truly magic, just like the stories behind the fabrics that went into it.
Thanks for sharing it, Rebecca!

September 4, 2014 - 2:52 am

angela - The quilt is beautiful..can’t wait to see it finished. I would love to learn to quilt. My grandmother took all of my grandad’s clothes and made quilt tops, I have two of those that I really need to quilt..maybe yours will motivate me!

September 9, 2014 - 6:30 am

Karen - This is so beautiful! I love that you felt your granny smiling down on you. I feel that too sometimes when making something artsy in my studio – both of my grandmothers were so artistic. I have made one small quilt and long to make another, larger one this time. Maybe I will get started right now. Have a lovely day!

September 24, 2014 - 10:57 am

Cheryl Wacks - Loved to see you made a quilt top! I have pieced many a small top and had friends quilt them on large quilt machines. Not a purest in the sense that one must hand quilt a top but rather get it quilted and enjoy it! We sleep under quilts my Mom made and feel her love wrapped around us all night long! Enjoy!

October 4, 2014 - 3:02 am

joyce - yes I have quilted. been thinking about picking up scraps and playing .thursday I started crocheting on one of my Moms crochet pieces, even though the stitches will not match and the yarn won’t either. lovely quilt you have there.

{ the sea }

“In each sail that skims the horizon,

In each landward-blowing breeze,

I behold that stately galley,

Hear those mournful melodies;

Till my soul is full of longing,

For the secret of the sea,

And the heart of the great ocean

Sends a thrilling pulse through me.”
